Common substrates include coated, uncoated paper, cardboard, food packaging paper, tin foil and metal paper. Less commonly used are cellophane, polyurethane and fabric. Gravure proofing is generally done online, and sometimes a proofer is also used.

The gravure is made by engraving or etching, and the finished plate will increase the hardness after chrome plating to improve the resistance to India. Solvent-based inks use different engraving or etching depths and shapes than water-based inks. Generally, the water-based ink is engraved on the plate surface, and the circumference of the plate roller is determined by the size of the printing machine and the printed graphics.

 According to different printing machines, plate rollers are available in aluminum copper plating and iron copper plating. When preparing the plate, the roller was heated in hot water, and then put in chloric acid solution to strip the chromium layer and rust layer. Then rinse clean, iron roll nickel plated to stabilize copper plating, aluminum roll galvanized to achieve the same day. The aluminum rollers must be treated with cyanogen before being copper plated. The process after engraving is chrome plating and preparation for proofing.

There are several ways to solve the pollution problem caused by gravure printing. Each method should be considered in terms of cost and resource consumption. Printing personnel should establish cooperative relations with their main source material suppliers, so that the suppliers can provide the required technical support in a timely manner, ensure high-quality product quality, and minimize pollution and waste. Use shallower ink tanks and improved doctor blade technology to reduce ink usage. The steam recovery system is the largest method to reduce solvent-based pollution.

Improvements in many equipment can reduce pollution. Printing press manufacturers use new technologies for their machines and install several process improvement control accessories on their equipment. The use of vegetable oil instead of gasoline as a solvent and the process of using water-based ink will reduce environmental pollution, and the use of less polluting solvent materials to replace the current solvent is also a good method. The above-mentioned methods not only do not affect the working efficiency of the printing press, but also can save costs and reduce pollution. It is inevitable that the printing industry that focuses on green and environmental protection will be the general trend.
